    * I have upgraded from wordpress version 2.0.0 to wordpress version 2.1

I have successfully upgraded the Battling-Obesity.com blog today, to the latest version of wordpress 2.1

There was a slight issue that occurred caused by my DSL connection which was a little shaky today (it’s been windy here – if that’s the reason). I’ve come to a routine to updating my blogs, as in the following order:

    * I post an entry to let people know that I’m in the process of upgrading
    * I backup the entire domain and all of the files to my local drive via FTP
    * I backup the MySQL database two ways .. first through the Manage/Backup and email me a copy, and by directly going into the cPanel, myPHPadmin and backing it up manually to save on my own computer
    * I print the Plugins page
    * I deactivate all of the plugins
    * In my cPanel, I go to the File Manager and delete ../wp-admin/ .. /wp-includes/ .. and if exists, the ../wp-content/cache/ folders. I also delete the files inside any backup folders, but don’t bother to delete the folders
    * I leave all of the root files by the way
    * I FTP the c:\2.1\wordpress\*.* folder and files from my computer to the blog’s root folder
    * I go to Options/Permalinks and update
    * I manually activate all the plugins that were activated before (and upgraded already in my c:\2.1 folders) from the print out
    * I’ve got a list of plugins that I shouldn’t keep activated and versions and double check, plus activate a few new plugins that I’ve grown to like
    * I go through the options – and make sure my Feedburner feed and plugin work. I have to go to Feedburner.com in my account and usually have to edit the feed details, re:ping and re:synch
    * While I’m at feedburner, I’ve been deactivating the summary feed, enabling the statistics, making sure my HART-caricature is the default logo on all feeds, and just looking around really.
    * I go through the rest of the Options and make sure every one is correctly configured
    * Browse and view the blog and test the links, the pages, the permalinks, and see if any errors exist
    * I then pretty much lose interest and just post the “I’m Finished” type of post, without thoroughly testing anything other than a visual view. But, once I start posting I will note if something doesn’t work properly.

Anyway .. My DSL connection must have died after uploading the c:\2.1\wordpress\ folder up to my domain .. and died out while I wasn’t looking. When I started to re-activate the plugins .. one the older ones that were not overwritten (because my restoration of files halted) .. created a problem. It took me about 10 minutes to notice that the version of the plugin was the same, and then I realized what had happened, uploaded all the files correctly .. and everything was all peachy.

The good news, is that while that was all happening .. I’ve noticed that all my pictures were extremely large – like 650kb each .. because I’m posting daily pictures of my meals over there, and calculated that I might run out of space within 1.4 years .. so, I mass edited all the pictures to be maximum 1000 x 1000 px and now the average size is about 120kb for the very large files now.

    * I have upgraded from wordpress version 2.0.3 to wordpress version 2.1

I have now upgraded the DogLvr.com blog to the latest wordpress version 2.1

There were no surprises or issues during the upgrade and, as with most of the updating process .. the longest time is making the backups!

    FashionBubbles.com

I’ve automatically translated this site to English. What I like about this site, are two things:

    1) The flexible content with left sidebar content, plus an additional 2nd sidebar for other stuff. I do like this concept and you might see something like this when it ever comes time to upgrade these templates of mine!

    2) The actual content inside that 2nd sidebar. This blog doesn’t really have many categories, but it is showing each category separately and adding its very own RSS feed for it, plus the last 3 entries in that category.

I have segregated the categories on my own 1-800-HART’s Picks Blog giving the option for some to subscribe. I’m not really sure if anybody is actually doing that though – because I have too many categories, besides my existing Feedburner accounts .. it just would have been too much to maintain.

There says some good things for a small limited category list. It’s become much much worse since I’ve been upgrading to wordpress version 2.1 because on some blogs the links are being combined with the categories, making a terribly long listing in the sidebar.

    * It’s about friggin’ time .. since 2004

    * Of course, $79.96 of that cheque was one sale (believe it or not!)

So, needless to say .. it is SAFE TO SAY .. that I suck at this Amazon commission earnings thingie. I’ve installed the new WP-AMAZON plugin that has been upgraded for wordpress version 2.1, but it only works if you use Firefox and only if you use visual editor as well. Otherwise, it doesn’t work – but, it is still in beta testing.

Now that I’ve got the balance of my Amazon Account … I don’t really see a need to further promote anything. However, I do have some links around my blogs – I will leave them online until the end of March 2007 Q1 to see if any earnings is generated. Most of the remaining earnings seems to be made from my PapillonLvr.com/blog/ selling Papillon Books!

I have successfully upgraded the Battling-Depression.com blog to the latest wordpress version 2.1

One thing’s for sure .. it sure gets easier after the 20th time 🙂

There were no apparent issues or problems during my upgrade process, so that’s good for me.

I stopped using Google Analytics long long ago .. yet, I seem to have the code on practically every site that I have (blog and non-blog).

But – since I’ve started using a few google @gmail.com email addresses .. for the life of me – I can’t remember what the frick my old password or what email I used to access the statistics!

    haha.

Yup. You can see how important Google Analytics Statistics are to me.

Currently, I have been relying on two types of statistics – that mean something to me, in my own world..

    * The Sitemeter Codes on the bottom of each page or my network public stats
    * The basic “refer” statistics on all my sites like this one

So .. Back to Square One – Trying Something New .. erm, Old!

    * WordPress Reports Plugin – I’ve just decided (today) that on all newly upgraded blogs to latest wordpress version 2.1 that I am going to install this plugin. What it does is tie into my Feedburner’s Standard (but expanded) stats in the Analyze tab. And, I’ve created a brand new google analytics account with one of my newer @gmail.com accounts and will be replacing 100% of the older code (goodbye to a year’s data I guess – since I was there from inception) and inserting the new code into all of my headers.

It might be nice to have the ability to see some of that information directly in my Dashboard – maybe I will utilize it in the future….. we’ll see! There’s a REPORTS button directly inside this wordpress and I don’t have to remember to log in anymore or decipher how to read all that crap. This way .. I’ll just have to figure out a way to remember how to decipher all that crap in my Reports from my Dashboard!

In most of my blogs .. I’m using Rich Manalang’s WP-AMAZON wordpress plugin ..

    * WP-AMAZON Plugin version 1.3.2 (Pre-Version 2.1 blogs)

This plugin worked great for me and I had either the 1.3.2 version installed (which gives a link under the Write box) or left the older 1.3.1 version (which gave me a quicktab button).

    * WP-AMAZON Plugin Version 2.0 Beta 1.1 is now available (For blogs on version 2.1 wordpress)

This is just a preliminary beta version, but so far seems to be working ONLY under the following conditions:

    >> Only on Firefox
    >> Only if you have the visual editor setting on

There are a few things that I’ve noticed that I hope will get fixed (like being able to copy CTRL-C the product name better so it fits in the permalink title box .. but hopefully beta testing will continue and upgrades to alpha versions will be made! Of the 20 blogs (out of 42) that I have already converted to wordpress version 2.1, I’m really only using one blog at the moment that I might use this plugin extensively, so I am only logging in with my Firefox and have switched the default setting to visual editor.

I don’t like visual editor .. I am now sure of that. But, you gotta do what ya gotta do, right?

    * Alternate Title: Why I never link SAM BASSO site on my PetLvr Blog Random Linking

This has nothing to do with Blogger blog design. But – I felt this had to be said.

It’s the point of it all.

I refuse to link to sites that have the following on every page in the footer.

C H E A T E R i.m.h.o. The only thing lower than that – are the people who are doing the same thing with misspelled keywords. Please keep them out of my reading view. Thanks. And maybe I’ll send some more readers your way.

I guess people with Internet Explorer don’t deserve to know how to Ninjafied their wordpress? In case you can’t read that blurb above the header .. it says ..

You have chosen to view this site in Internet Explorer. While the content contained in this site is accessible to Internet Explorer, we have chosen not to support it’s use due to a wide variety of rendering bugs which are only in Internet Explorer. To have the intended experience, please consider using a standards compliant browser such as Firefox which is freely available for both Windows and Mac.

C’mon Aaron! Just choose a different template! Sure .. it’s accessible, but only in my Bloglines through your RSS Feed.

    No offense – but, that’s so … 2003
