I was looking around my sites this week - because I had 8 domains that were coming up for renewal and I had to be sure it was okay to let some lapse, or be sure NOT to make some of the domains lapse.

You see .. if you recall, last September/October I consolidated a lot of my network. I had two hosting ISP’s and consolidated them down to just 1 ISP … and I consolidated two of my “series” of blogs and domains to subdomains … where I had 26 domains before, I now have 2 domains with at least 13 subdomains on each (BattlingForHealth.com and the AndYouWill.com sites)

Now - that’s a lot of domains, and I took shortcuts in creating most of them over a Sunday Afternoon. I will give you a real-live example I fixed today.

Every day my dedicated server automatically sends me a “LogWatch” email run at 4:00am every morning. For the most part, there is not much in there to worry about.

However, on some occassions I receive some details such as the following:

Authentication Failures:
unknown (66.221.196.201): 6083 Time(s)

etc

What I do is use my PuTTy program (to access SSH) and post ..

September was another great milestone for me and my network .. I decided to consolidate my network into a handful of sites, rather than 50+ sites. This took a little doing for me, actually doing it 3 times I mean, because I had some obstacles in my way in getting everything to work properly with regard to transferring the old domains to the new domains, and the structure involved. I wanted to have mega sites .. with the format .. megasite.com/subsite/ but ended up having something like .. subsite.megasite.com ..

It’s one of those things .. I wish I was cloned!

I have two online projects currently taking a lot of my time. One of them is the attempting to consolidate the blogs on my network into a smaller structure. I have been working on the “Battling-Series” of blogs first.

What I would like to do is move each of my “Battling” blogs into a subfolder location of an entirely new domain. It’s easy enough to transfer domains to another location on the same server …

Attempts to hack me continue

Every day .. someone is trying to hack into the dedicated server and my PetLvr blog .. but, so far security features and anti-spam control has blocked everything and will continue to do so (I hope and have to believe that). This is really evident in my daily LogWatch reports - because I see at least one IP trying to ‘brute force’ a login into the root of the dedicated server. Now, most of this stuff is automated (I’m told) and sometimes scripts or bots jump around trying to locate unsecure networks or gain access. So far, I get IP addresses attempting this in the 2,000 to 50,000 attempt ranges per day (as seen on previous post about the moderation). At the end of the day, we add the new IP to the banned list and another day goes by until the next Logwatch report.

I hope this evil person will give up one day, and move on to somewhere else.

July 2007 was another transitional month for me, and the HART-Empire Network. June 2007 resulted in me shutting down most of my blogs and a real slowdown due to off-line work requirement. The first half of July was tidying up all the loose ends and making sure everything was working fine and running. Then - I started to post on the weekends with my EVDO Internet Access on my laptop at the cottage on weekends.

I soon found out that despite upgrading and combining both of my old Mega ISP#1 and Reseller ISP#2 accounts into a single Virtual Private Server (VPS) .. it was NOT enough. With all my blogs and sites, over 50 of them, the CPU resources and other system resources were reaching the maximum allowed. And, when my VPS system reached the maximum resources … what did it do? It killed resources. This shuts down my entire network. There is no email. You can’t access my sites. I can’t login to any sites. It is very frustrating! Mostly, because while I am a quite computer savvy person, I am not a linux or tech support type of computer savvy person. It took me a whole day (the first time it broke down) to understand that the tech support person who couldn’t just flipped a search and reboot my server in 10 seconds .. decided to waste me about 6 hours trying to teach me what to do. It took about 6 hours because this tech guy was not a good teacher, and gave me bum instructions, and inadvertently created other problems by trying to teach me (renaming my password, etc - stuff like that).

My host provider has started to set the wheels in motion and get our new “Dedicated Server” ready for use .. This process should be completed by early morning (CST) and at that point all files will (probably) be transfered over.

Hopefully - this will be painless process .. Although I won’t be posting new articles tonight - I do have some PRE-posted articles coming through a few of the sites …

Yesterday between the hours of 1:39pm CST and 5:14pm CST all of my sites were down. It seems that my new VPS (Virtual Private Server) may not be sufficient for my needs for as long as I had hoped. I figured, I would not have to upgrade to a full dedicated server until the Fall 2007 or early 2008.

But, a process reached a critical level and killed many other processes, and halted everything. All that seemed to have been needed was figuring out how to “correctly restart the named/bind services”.
