    oops/ I scanned and took image off my “first draft” which I destroyed due to typo’s // I reprinted them to fix HorseLvr.com and Battling-Schizophrenia.com … I’d rescan and image, but – well, you get the idea~

    I get anywhere from about 2 to 15 new subscribers daily who log into one of my many sites and registers their name and email. I’ve been doing this since ‘Day One’ .. that is allowing people to register as a SUBSCRIBER to my sites .. on the hope of collecting names for a newsletter or summary emailing of updates of HART-Empire Network news.

    But – I wonder .. I’ve just looked at the last 2 months and I don’t think I’ve received any new subscriber that did not have a funny email name and on the MAIL.RU platform.

    As you know, most registrations with the MAIL.RU email addresses are spammy – and, I will always believe that you are a spammer if you use this email address.

    Maybe I should just block the MAIL.RU registrations altogether? Hmmmm …

    From Wikipedia

    Mail.ru Agent (M-Agent) is a free instant messaging program created by Mail.ru – one of the largest Russian web portals. Besides basic IM functionality (presence, contact list, sending text messages, file transfers, message history, etc) M-Agent also provides online gaming, peer-to-peer voice calls, low-rate VoIP calls, free SMS, automatic mail checking and other useful features.

    Attempts to hack me continue

    Every day .. someone is trying to hack into the dedicated server and my PetLvr blog .. but, so far security features and anti-spam control has blocked everything and will continue to do so (I hope and have to believe that). This is really evident in my daily LogWatch reports – because I see at least one IP trying to ‘brute force’ a login into the root of the dedicated server. Now, most of this stuff is automated (I’m told) and sometimes scripts or bots jump around trying to locate unsecure networks or gain access. So far, I get IP addresses attempting this in the 2,000 to 50,000 attempt ranges per day (as seen on previous post about the moderation). At the end of the day, we add the new IP to the banned list and another day goes by until the next Logwatch report.

    I hope this evil person will give up one day, and move on to somewhere else.

    There is a limit to simultaneous activity on my entire network now

    Apparently … tech support had reduced the simultaneously attempts of anybody accessing any of my sites at the same time down to 75 … I asked them to meet me half way and leave it around 100. That sounds pretty low, considering I have almost 50 active blogs now. It’s cut down the ‘brute force’ attempts from a 5 figure number each day to a 4 figure number now .. just by forcing a disconnect after 100 attempts. I guess that’s good.

    But, what are the odds that 100 unique people are visiting any or all or just one site at the same time? Not likely, in the general sense … as my traffic as a whole network has dwindled to about 400-700 daily uniques since my server moves this summer. In the specific sense, if any of my sites have some social promotion happening (digg, stumble upon, reddit, etc) .. on the major blogs that I have these chances – well, I’ve reactivated my WP-CACHE wordpress plugin to help out. This is a weird plugin, as changes may not seem to appear ‘instantly’ and when you come here, it tries to pop out many pages into your cache to speed things up – and, that causes a slight initial delay. But, after that it’s pretty fast surfing!

    Oh – I also upgraded the RAM on the dedicated server last week

    In the past couple of weeks, it was evident that the number of blogs really affects the CPU resources and memory and other resources of the dedicated server … and I actually found myself upgrading the RAM memory of the server from 1GIG to 2GIG – for now. If I need to, I will upgrade from 2GIG to 4GIG, but I’m leaving that alone for the moment – until I need to upgrade – because when I will need to use that amount of RAM memory, I think I will have more situations to deal with and might have to split one or a few blogs away from the dedicated server into their own account or maybe split up the dedicated server into two accounts.

    Meanwhile – all of this is costing me money … but, without spending money I would be shut down. Here’s what it is costing me, in case you are curious about moving your stuff to a dedicated server….

    * Dedicated Server – $179 USD per month
    * General Management Package – $69 USD per month
    * Upgraded RAM Memory by 1 GIG – $14 USD per month
    >> Total $262 USD per month.

    For the amount of revenues that I am making, it certainly seems excessive. A lot of people out there shouldn’t be paying 30%-50% of their earnings for hosting cost. But, the accountant in me recognizes that this is a fixed cost, and the variable earnings has greater potential to increase and reduce that percentage – and, I’m not going to increase the HART-Empire Network or its revenues by having server problems, downtime, slowdowns due to moving servers, etc etc etc .. or, by having individual accounts everywhere around the internet. It just makes sense to consolidate everything and focus on the positives.

    Local Problems with resolving DNS sites on my own ISP

    On the oddball side of things .. yesterday, for the second time in 2 months .. I was unable to access any of my sites – meaning, I couldn’t see them .. no email … etc etc. My ISP was blocking the IP of the dedicated server! Last month, this affected all Sympatico users in western Canada. Yesterday (as far as I could tell) it affected both Shaw and Sympatico/MTS customers in Manitoba. Everybody else could see my sites. Also, after 3 hours back and forth with my server’s tech support people and my ISP’s tech support people, I was able to retrieve all my email by changing my settings from mail.domain.com to just the IP of the server. So, it was definitely some RESOLVER or DNS and NAMESERVER issue. Everybody from both sides of the tech support kept saying … “Don’t worry about it! It will eventually work itself out!” >.. but, when your sites are down, it’s not a good feeling.

    But – the sites were NOT down, and in fact .. when that happens .. all I have to do is go to Kroxy.net anonymous server to view the sites! Also, bookmarking my public SiteMeter stats link and noticing Google Adsense Earnings gives me somewhat comfort knowing that at least it’s not my server’s fault.

    SO – the HART-EMPIRE-NETWORK.com seems to be working, there hasn’t been any crashes .. my resource levels are not being overburdened .. and everything seems to be loading faster.

    * At least, that’s what I think .. what do you think? Have you been surfing any of the sites and noticed anything different in the past two weeks? I’d like to know! Please leave me a comment!

    On A Side Note .. if you are in Winnipeg .. Tuesday August 28, 2007 – 7:00pm

    Sorry .. but, I will have to take all sites offline – again! But, it won’t be long.

    PS> I figured out that my server was crashing every morning at 3am due to some hefty cron jobs and automated wordpress backups being scheduled to happen around that time, and was creating problems. I have spread these cron jobs apart this morning, and will be adding another 1GB RAM memory to the dedicated server to help keep things be healthy.

    * I’m keeping track of my HART-Empire Earnings for 2007 Online ..

    Here is the link: HART-Empire Network Earnings Spreadsheet Document

    July 2007 was another transitional month for me, and the HART-Empire Network. June 2007 resulted in me shutting down most of my blogs and a real slowdown due to off-line work requirement. The first half of July was tidying up all the loose ends and making sure everything was working fine and running. Then – I started to post on the weekends with my EVDO Internet Access on my laptop at the cottage on weekends.

    I soon found out that despite upgrading and combining both of my old Mega ISP#1 and Reseller ISP#2 accounts into a single Virtual Private Server (VPS) .. it was NOT enough. With all my blogs and sites, over 50 of them, the CPU resources and other system resources were reaching the maximum allowed. And, when my VPS system reached the maximum resources … what did it do? It killed resources. This shuts down my entire network. There is no email. You can’t access my sites. I can’t login to any sites. It is very frustrating! Mostly, because while I am a quite computer savvy person, I am not a linux or tech support type of computer savvy person. It took me a whole day (the first time it broke down) to understand that the tech support person who couldn’t just flipped a search and reboot my server in 10 seconds .. decided to waste me about 6 hours trying to teach me what to do. It took about 6 hours because this tech guy was not a good teacher, and gave me bum instructions, and inadvertently created other problems by trying to teach me (renaming my password, etc – stuff like that).

    So – again – I basically shut down my blogs for the last half of July and was debating what to do. I have finally decided to upgrade to a fully dedicated server and just get it over with – that happened yesterday August 1, 2007 and they are still getting everything ready. I’m not sure if technically you are reading this from the old VPS or the dedicated server. I just know that whatever I earned in July – I should be grateful (and a little lucky that sponsors didn’t walk away from me) and I am optimistic about moving forward with August and promoting the HART-Empire Network.

    As for the July 2007 earnings … here they are. The earnings are on an “Accrual” basis, where I’m documenting what I’ve earned, but monies will usually come in the following month, or (if ever) when I reach the minimum threshold for release of my earnings for payment. The expenditures are on a “Cash” basis, as I pay something related to my online earnings, I just load up the spreadsheet and modify it.

    Summary of Gross Earnings 2007

    * January 2007 – $344.61
    * February 2007 – $372.37
    * March 2007 – $492.41
    * April 2007 – $491.85
    * May 2007 – $620.99
    * June 2007 – $632.47
    * July 2007 – $672.66

    ** Year-To-Date Gross Earnings (Jan-Jul/2007) – $3,627.36
    * Average (YTD) $17.11 per day or, $518.19 per month

    Despite my difficulties and second monthly slowdown .. it was nice to see an increase in revenues. But, cash outflows were high in July 2007, and exceeded my cash inflows again, but just barely. There were three things that contributed to my cash outflows:

    * I contributed $300 on account of the new Dedicated Server. As it turns out, my final monthly price will now me $179 USD per month, hosted by SingleHop Brand (or midPhase). Because I’m not computer savvy, I opted for the general management package of $69 USD per month to have a “just in case something does happen, don’t look at me” policy! Maybe I’ll learn a little as we go along and do not need that additional expense, but I’d rather pay it since I can afford to – and have it, than risk something really bad happening to me.

    * My first EVDO bill came in July .. that’s on an accrual basis – in CDN$ funds. I just paid that plus a little extra scheduled for tomorrow, to pay off last month’s bill and just in case I was over for second part of July – I wanted to pay something on account, so it won’t stop me from blogging in August at the cottage.

    * I bought a new “PAID” wordpress plugin in July! WP-CLONER – I have great plans for this plugin. I’ve set up a master blog in my network, and will be keeping it current with all the plugins I want and templates .. and then I will just (as they say..) CTRL-C the settings directly to all my other blogs automatically! I’m still setting it up, and about halfway through setting up FTP and logins etc to do that .. I will be posting a better review of it after my first update.

    Hope everybody is having a good summer! I will be away on vacation for the next few weeks at the cottage, but will be popping back home for a day or two in between .. and have access to the internet and all my emails.
