    Effective July 1st, 2007 ….

When I moved both of my servers to the new server .. I received the opportunity to get another domain ‘for life’ and I did just that.

So .. effective July 1, 2007 .. this is how I will be referring my sites as ..

    OLD NAME: HART-Empire Network
    NEW NAME: HART-Empire

    “HART-Empire Blog”

This is where I will continue to talk about everything and anything that is related to blogging and my so-called blogging empire I call the .. HART-Empire Network. Besides what my thoughts are and the things that I do in running a network of sites .. eventually I will be going back to promoting the sites within the network itself in the “EMPIRE” blog.

    OLD NAME: HART-Empire Network II
    NEW NAME: HART-Network

    “HART-Network Blog”

I will be using this domain to aggregate all of the many sites in different channels into the individual channel feeds. So, if someone is interested in seeing all the posts of my pet category channel in one feed, this is where you get it.

    OLD NAME: HART-Empire Network III
    NEW NAME: 1800HART on MySpace

    “1800HART on MySpace”

Actually, I’m still in denial what can be done over at MySpace .. but continue to look around and add friends, receive comments, and so on! I don’t really have a specific theme what I want to do, although – I sort of do. I just don’t have the time to do that – yet. It sits, accumulating friends.

OLD NAME: (n/a – this is a new domain)
    NEW NAME: HART-Empire Network

“HART-Empire Network” (aka the NEW HOME PAGE)

I will be using this domain as the general reference for all HART-Empire Network stuff, like a sitemap. There will be more PAGES in this blog, than Blog Entries. For instance .. the advertising pages will be moved here, the bios, an updated “About the Empire” page .. and stuff like that. Anything and everything network related as a reference source, will end up on that page. When you link to the “HART-Empire Network” .. I hope that you link to HART-Empire-Network.com from now on ..

Yes .. I know that sounds confusing… Hopefully it will all make sense in the next few months.

This has got to be the second most annoying feature that I’ve noticed in EVERY SINGLE BLOG that has been upgraded to the latest wordpress version 2.2. The first being that my Iimage Browser Plugin does not work because it requires one file to be placed in the wp-admin folder .. and my InstantUpgrade plugin deletes it every time there is an upgrade to my blog, initiated by me.

I’m sorry – I can’t remember who said this, or where I found it .. although I’m almost sure it was in the WordPress Support Forums..

    In your WordPress Admin …..

    1) MANAGE
    2) FILES
    3) SELECT .htaccess (for rewrite rules)

    php_value upload_max_filesize 2M

Thanks it. 2M is 2MB so, if you need something larger for uploading video files or audio files you can change it there. So .. your .htaccess file might look like something like this:

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^hart-empire.com [NC]
    RewriteRule (.*) www.hart-empire.com/$1 [R=301,L]
    php_value upload_max_filesize 2M

    # BEGIN WordPress

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    # END WordPress

    * MichelleMalkin.com

TheBlogStudio did a nice job switching Michelle Malkin yesterday .. from Movable Type to Wordoress.

I like it when you click on any blog permalink (either lead story, or in the archives) .. and RELATED articles pop up in the center column.

Actually, that’s quite clever~ and gets your attention instead of the links at the end of the article.

But, as much as I like that feature .. What would I add to that design?

The last 20 posts in a line-by-line format under the LEAD story. Also, in the archives .. I think they are a little too vague and require too many clicks. I would suggest the a better plugin, where at least 100% of the posts from the current month are listed in plain view.

    * heads up from JOE YANUZZI // thanks.

How my email was configured before

Up to, and including the day before I started to move all my domains to the new server .. I was receiving (on average) about 900 emails per day.

Around January 2007 .. it was about 400-450 emails per day .. and last summer around 250-300 emails per day.

Basically, I attribute the increase of email due to blogging, Spam Karma notices, moderation requests and subscriptions to comment repies. Oh, and usually a couple hundred extra on Tuesdays over on Open Mic Night at Liz’s Successful-Blog!

But, my email has been set up for years. Basically, I was using 5 different domains for emails … PetLvr.com, HARTandYVONNE.com, 1800HART.com, PapillonLvr.com, and my business HBSMC.com. For each of these emails, I had carefully created addresses that I would want to use in certain instances .. like .. info@, webmaster@ sales@ accounting@ tax@ and about 70 more ‘aliases’. In my Eudora client, I would only be checking for new emails from one account, as all of those email aliases would route to one single login .. like, hart@.

That’s why I was always using .. hart (at) PetLvr (dot) com .. as my main email address.

And, I didn’t mind the large email traffic. I have TONS of filters in my Eudora that sorts all my email for me, when business writes, my wife writes, by blog reference, or certain individual, .. and my Spamnix add-on filtered all the junk mail into a JUNK folder, so I don’t even have to look at it. Of course, at the end of the day, or a few times during the day i DID look at it, because you never know what the program might catch as Spam… and I “unjunk” it … and the rest gets transfered to the TRASH folder.

How I configured my email this time

I’ve got tons of domains, 52 actually. I can receive emails from all of them, but in the past .. outgoing email had to be screened as one of those 5 email accounts that I setup. This time, I wanted the opportunity to reply to an email from the same email address it was sent to .. so, I am creating a new email for every domain I have, as I am setting this up on the new servers. For instance .. all of these accounts are valid:

    hart (at) PetLvr (dot) com
    hart (at) HART-Empire (dot) com
    hart (at) Battling-Addiction (dot) com
    hart (at) The-Singers (dot) com

… and so on, and so on, and so on. If you send an email to hart@ any of my domains .. you should be able to get me.

But -then I had a phone call from a client, who mentioned that my email was getting bounced. She knew I had no email, because she reads my business blog .. but, when I announced that I had finally received email .. she tried to contacted me. You see .. on all my invoices and letterheads .. I use info@ instead of hart@.

Okay. So I went back to my old server’s email set-up and picked about 5 good emails that I liked to use like .. h@ (and other alphabet single letters), info@, advertising@ and a few more I would like to keep secret for now. Then, I started to created the new emails!

Well – I got through half of the Battling-Series of blog/domains before I said something .. “TO HELL WITH THAT .. THIS IS TAKING TOO LONG!” … So what I did was set up one new email for every domain and let it be a “catch-all” for all unrouted email to be forwarded to this one new email address.

Today I received over 5,000 emails … (give or take) .. and I’m still downloading new emails as I write this. Rather than discontinue this “catch-all” practice .. I have decided to just eliminate this feature on offending domains. Today, 97% of those 5,000 emails have come from two domains that I set-up .. both in the “Battling-Series”… going through the alphabet trying to find active email addresses.

I’m still a fan of using this catch-all feature for email addresses .. but I will have to go back to manually create some unique emails for these offending domains. I use Fax-To-Email .. and don’t know if I received any faxes this morning – because it’s still downloading new emails.

Regardless – I will be keeping .. hart@ any of my domains ..

PS .. of these 5,000 or so emails .. so far only 17 emails reached my INBOX .. Another reason why I prefer to use EUDORA email client!

    That’s the “Good News”.

I wouldn’t say that there is “Bad News” .. but, it sure is taking a long time to migrate all the accounts. While I can confirm that all the accounts have been moved from my ISP#1 and ISP#2 over to my new ISP#3 … not all of them are active. Generally, I’m doing it in my spare time and making sure things work. I’m also upgrading each site to wordpress version 2.2 (using the InstantUpgrade plugin) and upgrading a few plugins to the latest version.

I’m also documenting what I am doing, and will create some sort of series of posts in this blog .. The experience, tips and learning curves that I have been faced with is valuable information i.m.o. and worth passing along to other people with growing pains, and doesn’t necessary have an arsenal of venture capital or support staff backing you!

Of all my sites .. I can only say that the following are completely migrated:

    (in alphabetical order)

    1) 1800HART.com/blog/
    2) 1800HART.com/picks/
    3) 62-151.com
    4) Battling-Addiction.com
    5) Battling-Cancer.com
    6) Battling-Depression.com
    7) Battling-HeartandStroke.com
    8) Battling-MS.com
    9) Battling-Obesity.com
    10) Battling-Schizophrenia.com
    11) Battling-Stress.com
    12) HART-Empire-Network.com
    13) HART-Empire.com
    14) HARTandYVONNE.com/blog/
    15) HBSMC.com
    16) PapillonLvr.com/blog/

These sites are definitely creating problems for me.

The rest of my sites .. well, I have looked at them and there is a site visible .. however, I have not taken the time to upgrade or test to see if everything is okay.

    Dear Author of Submitted Articles….

You work for me. That’s right .. I consider you to be my “hired help” .. you are a “paid author” .. I have engaged you to guest author articles in one of my many blogs and contribute to the content of the blog. As for payment of your services .. I will maintain a permanent link to one of your sites or ventures that was provided in the “resource” section of your article.

I scan many free “ezine” and other submitted article directories .. and thought I would HELP YOU by letting you see some of the criteria that I might use to REJECT YOUR ARTICLE from inclusion into one of my blogs.

    * You may consider these to be my TOP 10 PEEVES. Here is a summary, and I will expand on them below:

    1) Articles were submitted to a place that limits me from using your articles
    2) Don’t change the title of the same article sent to different article directories
    3) Fact: I don’t use your articles because you have shady looking links
    4) Don’t rehash the same article in twenty different ways
    5) Based on a study from 2002 or earlier? What gives? This is a blog
    6) The price of your article is just too high
    7) Quit making up words or phrases
    8) You don’t need repetitive links
    9) I prefer articles that stand alone and are unique
    10) Word count does not include your resource box description

    * I also provide one great tip that gets my attention all the time and I’m a big fan of this article writer

www.articlehub.com/ – here are the terms at the bottom of every page:

Notice: If you use an automated tool to scrape the content off this site you are liable to be fined up to $150,000 per article.

If you wish to syndicate this site’s articles on your own site, you can copy by hand a maximum of 25 articles per year per domain you own, or use our RSS feed.

25 articles per domain. Are you kidding me? I would like to know why people submit articles to this site. It can’t be to promote their work – because, I will never publish it in my blogs. If I want a source that has articles that I can use – I will prefer one that I can use up to 25 articles PER WEEK PER BLOG!

I stopped using GoArticles late 2005

On my PetLvr blog .. I’ve got about 2600 posts. In the beginning I used to do searches of my own site to see if there was a duplicate post. It became too time consuming. Now – I rely on my wordpress. If there is a duplicate article posted with the same title .. there will be a -1 or -2 added to the end of the URL ..

Don’t try working your way around duplicate content filters of Google or something like that and change the title of the article, if it’s the same content. Yes .. I know that’s what SEO people tell you – “Trick the people” .. But, you should know – if you trick me once – I write down your name and keep a log. I found out back in late 2005 that most of these duplicate articles with different titles were 100% people submitting to GoArticles. I just unsubscribed all my RSS Feeds from GoArticles and don’t even bother looking at their articles anymore. Twice burned three times shy baby. I wish sites would look at the publisher’s content side of things, instead of the author’s SEO side of things .. and not push this concept .. like suggested here.

Tasty Homemade Treats And Recipes For Your Best Friend
    By Darrel Rondo

Although this post has less than 500 words, the content to me initially seemed to be satisfactory enough to post this article over on the PetLvr Blog. Recipes for homemade pet treats are always interesting, and can possibly save people money, or be a hobby for the pet lovers who want to put their own ingredients into their pets’ tummies.

But – the author chose to use the TINYURL link redirection to promote his site. I am not a fan of these, because you don’t readily know where you are clicking and going to – until you click on it. STRIKE ONE. Then, at the site .. the links are masked by a javascript, so when you hover your mouse over it – you can’t see where those link goes to either. STRIKE TWO. And, finally .. all these links are just affiliate links to clickbank purchase screens anyway. STRIKE THREE.

RECOMMENDATION: This site didn’t even have a link or page of the original article that was included in the Ezine Article directory. If there were more articles written by the author on this site, I would feel better that perhaps this person is an expert or at least can qualify as a “guest blogger” in my sites. Then, as the author builds up a reputation and library himself, I don’t see anything wrong with putting up a section of “Recommended E-Books For Purchase” that he seem to have hand-picked. Just state that in advance so we know. Right now, I would NEVER want to send any of my readers to your site.

I was going through my Bloglines and I came across an author who wrote and submitted about 13 similar articles all about the same topic, ranging about 363 words in length. Although the title was much different on each article that made it curious for me to read and possibly select for inclusion into my sites .. by the 2nd paragraph on each article the whole point of the article was pretty much the same. Not only adding insult to injury, the final paragraph (the resource section) stated something like this.. “The author of this article would like you to visit {link to site here} and the {link to sitemap here}”..

By the way, I am aware of software that does this automatically, and other software that compares two articles and gives score – and I have it installed on my computer. I remember finding one author who’s 7 ‘different’ versions of the same article each reached a 79% difference from the original. Not too smart.

I have a piece of paper on my bulletin board of authors who’s articles I will never include in my sites, for various reasons and I have just added your name. YOU ARE CHEATING trying to fool the “duplicate content rule” and you may get away with it on a few articles – but, it’s very noticeable from a person who sees ALL your articles.

I’m looking for articles in a blog. People relate that to current events or new stuff. I just don’t see the point of posting articles that justify and try to explain the significance of studies from 2002 or earlier – before blogging became popular. Now, if you compared a 2002 study to a 2007 study and noted the differences – that would be interesting. Otherwise, I just pass on these type of articles.

Curiously so, when I do find these type of articles that are written .. the resource box usually ends up with something like .. “Read more articles like this in our article section” .. and it’s true – their resource section all have articles like that one – outdated analysis of old studies. I think studies and results of 2006 (one year behind) is pretty current and worth considering.

Some articles are quite informative and topical to my sites, but here’s another thing about shady links mentioned above. You might have written a great article, but if you link to puppy mill sites I’m never going to use you. This also goes for other similar articles and links.

Now, if you are just promoting your own site .. (for instance, you sell stop smoking aids) and write a really good article about tips to help stop smoking .. then link your “quit smoking” site .. I might include your article. But, if you are writing an article about a “quit smoking product or pill” to help you stop smoking as one of the tips, and link to some affiliation store .. I will not use your article. I’m looking for INFORMATION Content .. not Marketing content. There’s a current author going around writing about 450 word articles, and the last 250 are about his product. YUCK. That’s just as bad.

I know you are writing these articles for free and trying to generate traffic and your articles do save me time from writing them, or hiring writers .. and I don’t mind giving you a permanent link from my blog back to your site and products. But .. it’s my readers that will be clicking these links and going back to your site. If they get spammed or disgusted or taunted with “Buy-Me” products from the get-go .. I look bad. Bottom line. I don’t need that.

Imagine if I posted a “How To” type of article, and the author posts a link to .. well, not a porn site .. but a respectable blog or website on the surface, but the site has popups. And, when you try to “X” them out, more popups pop up. Can we say .. AN-NOY-ING?

I can’t believe you are stupid enough and can’t spell .. because your grammar seems fine everywhere else and you can spell Mesothelioma and other 26 letter words! Please do not use your articles for experiments to make it easy to search for your articles on google or technorati. I will correct your spelling mistakes anyway .. because if I see it, I will not leave the error there – it’s my blog! If I use your article, I never promise that I will post an article with known spelling mistakes, just so you can search me easier. I am giving you your resource box and permanent link. PAID IN FULL. If I see too many of them on many different articles and it’s quite obviously a deliberate action so you can ‘search’ who is using your articles – your name goes on my list – and I will just not use your articles. Life’s too short.

For the most part, submission directories allow the writers to include up to 3 links. But really .. LESS IS MORE. It is a frustrating making the links linkable, when it is something like this … HART is from the HART-Empire.com whish is a Site about HART and his EMPIRE and his sites he includes in his HART-EMPIRE NETWORK

Can we say .. overkill? I use a wordpress plugin that converts all URLs to a clickable link. That’s all that is necessary. I think it’s okay to put both your name and URL .. so, something like.. “Visit PetLvr – [The Blog] at PetLvr.com/blog/ ” is satisfactory enough.

I should say, that unless you are linking to a 3rd party and unrelated site, I tend to NOT make good on clickable links throughout the article, or at the beginning of the article .. instead of at the end in the resource box. For instance, if linking to the Humane Society in Paragraph 2 is okay .. but, linking to a page of rescue organizations on your site in Paragraph 2 is not okay – i.m.h.o. – keep your links at the end!

I can tell you right now .. I try to avoid articles that have “PART 1” or “PART 2” in its title, unless I am convinced that I have all the parts, and all the parts are worthy to post in my blogs. Then, it could be cool. I might post one every morning for a future week, or all consecutively back to back. I do this only because I do not want to cross link them together in my blogs, because that takes time.

But, the worst offenders are the articles that the body text refers to previously written articles. For instance, “I mentioned in my previous article that ..blah blah blah .. now I will mention ..blah blah blah “. To me, all you did was just waste 200 words of text. I might never have posted your previous article, and I certainly do not have the time or energy to hunt it down -or, link them together from the permalinks in my blog.

Personally, I prefer to post articles that are about the 500 word count range. I think this is a long enough article to be able to have a point, make a point, and not loose interest or fall asleep half way through the article and click on NEXT. I can’t tell you how many articles I rejected, because that although the submitting directory would indicate that this article had about 500 words, there might be two closing paragraphs about the writer or the writer’s sites that take up 250 words.

Here’s my one great tip that could help you write more articles that I might be interested in publishing on one of my blogs …. Michael Russell – Look. Learn. Do.

Why? I am a fan of Michael Russell’s style of articles that he submits for the following reasons:

    1) The title is topical and informative (catches my eye in my Bloglines, about a specific subject)
    2) I’ve never ever seen rewrites or duplicate articles (that I can recall)
    3) His articles are usually more than 500 words (550’ish on average on the top of my head)
    4) His resource section is simple – one line, one link.. “Michael Russell Your Independent guide to [link]” (SEO must be pretty good to link one keyword i.e. “DOGS” to one URL …think about it)
    5) Each article is unique, and complete. (no Part 1, Part 2 or references to previous articles or promises of future articles)

    * Hope this helps you. // HART

Rather than posting a lot of little news updates or one-liners like some twitheads do, I will just be updating this post for all my news related to the moving of my accounts from my ISP#1 (Mega Account) and ISP#2 (Reseller Account) to the new ISP#3 (Pro-Phase Account). Latest news is on top .. just like it would show up in a blog ~

    * Monday, June 11, 2007

There is progress and I recognize the intent – but I had a few questions during the day with no responses. Until about 9:30pm Hello, Im sorry for the long delay in response and completions. there were some issues that prevented us from completing a few migrations not just yours but it is resolved and I am currently working on your migration and will notify you when complete. Once again I am so sorry for the delay in response (totally unacceptable) and the delay in completion.

Backup has now physically started and I think I created a new issue for delay. One of the accounts on ISP#2 that is being transferred .. conflicts with an account name on ISP#1.. ISP#2 (the backup being moved today) needs to be changed and renamed or it might create problems in the future.

Once all backups are made on ISP#2 I’ll post entries on the blogs once again and then change Nameservers. Once the switch kicks in I’ll have a lot of blogging to do!

    * I’m keeping track of my HART-Empire Earnings for 2007 Online ..

I posted my 2007 earnings for the period January 1, 2007 to April 30, 2007 last month .. OVER HERE ..and it is my intention to update it every month – and “keep score”. It’s also my hope to show all the “newbies” and even the “not-so-newbies-but-been-around-the-block-too” people .. that it really does take time to get things built up and to a level where you can earn revenues from online activities.

I have now been officially blogging for MORE than two complete years as my PetLvr site reached it’s 2nd anniversary on May 31, 2007. Personally, I think whoever says that they are making money within their first six months are either “the exception”, lying, or will eventually burn out and never make it long-term. I don’t think I could ever have made money within the first six months .. however, I chose not to invest money or advertise during my time blogging .. and recognize that 2 years before one starts making money might be a little longer than the average person. If I didn’t have my online career and the slowdown every Jan-June from lack of involvement and time reasons .. well, I believe I would be way ahead than where I am today.

I’ve learned to be patient with the earnings part (and hopefully not annoying of my readers) but anything goes with the monetization aspect .. in the hopes not to be reliant on one sole source of revenue. Definitely, Text Link sponsorship has helped me get a boost in my earnings and as for Google Adsense .. it’s hard not to take advantage somehow and use them on the sites.

Here is what my earnings looked like since DAY ONE for both adsense and text link sponsorship .. so .. be patient! As you can see, I’ve only been using TLA for 1-year and I’ve earned more than double what adsense was for 2-years. I see real estate space for future TLA earnings, but limited to my sites and their potential. For adsense, there are other variables that I keep in mind (mostly traffic) but I think might have the greater exponential growth possibility. I could be wrong though! 😀

I might add, that in case you were interested in sponsoring a text link on any of my blogs .. please check out: HART-Network.com/advertise/

    *Gratuitious Link*

It’s Also A Good Idea To Start Keeping Track

I’m using the Google Spreadsheet Document and constantly update it as I go along, and free to look at my figures, or even my formulas or the way I set this up .. for your own use!

    * Here is the link: HART-Empire Network Earnings Spreadsheet Document (I hope you can’t change anything and it really is in VIEW mode – it’s hard to tell because I’m always signed in with my Google Talk! If not, please do not save any changes :D)

Obviously, the earnings are on an “Accrual” basis, where I’m documenting what I’ve earned, but monies will usually come in the following month, or (if ever) when I reach the minimum threshold for release of my earnings for payment. The expenditures are on a “Cash” basis, as I pay something related to my online earnings, I just load up the spreadsheet and modify it.

    Summary of Gross Earnings 2007

    * January 2007 – $344.61
    * February 2007 – $372.37
    * March 2007 – $492.41
    * April 2007 – $491.85 (previously reported as $476.08)
    * May 2007 – $620.99

    ** Year-To-Date Gross Earnings (Jan-May/2007) – $2,322.23

    * Average (YTD) $15.38 per day or, $464.45 per month

I’ve added more information related to my costs and net earnings. In May, I received a cheque from Hear and Play Music for $15 and somehow, my account at AuctionAds earned $0.77 and I’ve adjusted April figures.

The big news is that I am moving servers this month to my new ISP#3 .. MIDPHASE, and have already begun the process with my backups and well, payments. I’m expecting a surcharge for the additional Bandwidth that I used up in May at my ISP#1 .. and an extra sub-contract support to help me segregate MySQL database at ISP#1 but, so far – Year To Date (Jan-May/2007) my cumulative net earnings were $1,046.67. And, when you subtract my June payments already made .. $346.76 .. I don’t know where the difference went to – because, I’ve only got less than $10 in my Paypal account at this moment.

*some day* Hopefully some of my paypal earnings can get transfered back to my credit card, or my savings!

I can only hope it’s before Xmas 2007 – when I wish I have saved enough for a mini-vacation getaway with my wife.
