* Yup – Still in the Network Mood (thinking outloud .. please don’t laugh)
I’ve yet to take that “REAL” first step to actually place an ad to hire bloggers, although I’ve kind of hinted it around on the blogs. But, I am serious, and need to hire bloggers to push forward in 2007.
Some of the problems that I feel is holding me back in pushing for that elusive Hunt for the Greatest Hired Blogger in the world .. is that I want to be sure that opportunities really do exist for a hired blogger to earn revenues here at the HART-Empire Network, and build up ways to increase traffic all around. I believe I have what it takes to assist in the promotion and crosslinking and other SEO stuff, besides the technical hosting, maintenance and other stuff. But, you know what bothers me the most? Stuff like this:
* Is my Reseller account big enough? I’ve been adding many blogs and using up my bandwidth. Will I underestimate what I might eventually need? Currently, I have my blogs set with approximately between 0.5Gig and 3.0Gig bandwidth per month. Is that enough? It is now. WAY (to quote Wayne’s World). But will it in the future?
* Content and rights issues .. not just for “the right thing to do” socially, but for blogger protection, content of the network, and maybe subsequent opportunities for hired bloggers with eBooks, stuff like that. What happens if a blogger leaves after a short period of time, or if he stays .. stuff like that.
* The actual Hiring process .. term, contract, number of posts, duties, responsibilities of both parties, stuff like that. I don’t want to hire someone every 2 weeks, and would much want to have some sort of long-term relationship (I hope) with one blogger who is earning money
* Pricing points. Like any employer, you want to be able to have your workers earn money and enjoy their work. And for those working harder and making more efforts to be better rewarded.
* Review and Hiring process .. You want the right fit for a blog and the writer I think. I always hated when I was growing up that you couldn’t get jobs without experience, but to get a job you needed experience. I’m sure there are untapped talent out there and I would want to be able to objectively give everybody a chance, that wants one .. On the other hand, once I start hiring – it’s not a hobby or me or myself or my wantings anymore – it is a business … my business .. and issues have to be considered.So .. I’ve been thinking “OF STUFF” .. but, not really looking at the details .. so I thought I would start sometime this week – during my backup and upgrading procedures .. and today I started an Excel Spreadsheet on my desktop
Scenario #1 – prices to pay bloggers
I have disregarded the pay per post or by the word scenarios. I don’t want that.
I’d love to be able to pay a firm monthly salary only because then both the blogger and myself would know exactly what the score is. However, if the blog doesn’t take off .. I’m out the money and chances are I would have to start from scratch to repair the damage. And if the blog takes off – I could be shorting the blogger’s opportunities. Unfortunately, I am unable to offer any guaranteed amount of earnings at this point in time.
So – after watching other people do it .. I think either one of the two ways is probably the best way for me to proceed:
* 100% of the first $100 monthly earnings to the blogger, and the rest split 60% blogger 40% network
* 70% to the blogger and 30% to the network from the first penny of earnings.The breakeven for this .. is $400.00 gross earnings, where earnings below this amount the first option benefits the blogger the best. For earnings over $400.00 gross per month, the second option earns the blogger more. So the question becomes whether or not each of these blogs can earn $400 gross per month, and how long it will take to do that.
My goal – is currently to monetize with text link advertising, contextual advertising, blogger advertising and affiliations and even recommended amazon and other stuff like that – in other words, any way I can .. within reason. I have to keep in mind that although this is my goal in the longer term .. the first goal is traffic building. I think if the traffic is built, the other will come afterwards. That has been working for me – but, having a blogger .. who is doing this as a living or part of a bunch of other ‘gigs’ ..money has to come sooner over later.
I wish I was able to afford to become a full-time “problogger” and my efforts can support my living habits, but it cannot. As such – I must continue with my offline work, and busy tax season comes back into full swing in the next couple of weeks (until mid June). I sure respect all other blog owners and mini-blog networks that are hiring people to blog for them for what they are doing. .. and the social promotional efforts they do .. it is very time consuming.
Just in case you were interested ..
I’ve always figured .. it never hurts to ask .. but, these are the blogs I am considering looking for bloggers:
* Every one of the Battling-Series of Blogs
* SEO blog
* Retirement Blog
* Curling Blog
* Music Blog
* Certain of the Shopping blogs
* I’ve got about 8 domains that I have yet to put blogs online
* I’m pretty much willing to back new blogger ideas’ and setup blogs for themI am pretty much willing to consider options and nothing is written in stone. Although, if someone asked about the Pet Related blogs I think I would want something different in place (multiple blogs included LVR Series) as it’s really the only one earning at this moment. On the other hand, if I do this by myself and I will have to be able to earn enough from my efforts to replace a portion of my offline efforts, because it is very time consuming. Otherwise, I will just let it slip like I did last year and come back in the fall and build it back up to where it was (just look at the sitemeter graphic under the network code).
Anyway .. I guess .. [/RANT OFF]

* Uggh .. version 2.1 update – Have you updated yet?
I’ve successfully updated PapillonLvr.com/blog/ from wordpress version 1.5.2 directly to the latest version 2.1 .. There was a few issues, because the template (believe it or not) was Pre-version-2.0 compatible. As well, a lot of the plugins that I have .. were also Pre-version-2.0+ compatible. So, it’s not like I had plugins that worked in, say .. version 2.0.7 and wouldn’t work in the new version 2.1 .. it was like the plugin is just not supported anymore and never worked since version 2.0 hit the world!
Besides that .. certain of the plugins that I had that could work, needed an upgrade before the plugin can be reactivated. And, if that wasn’t enough .. most of the older plugins weren’t “template smart” like a lot of them are today .. Code had to be everywhere in the header, the footer, the sidebar, and the index. I made the mistake of fixing this first – before I realized that the template I was using (Oxymod version 0.2) didn’t work. I had to replicate on version on the newer version (Oxymod version 1.4).
This Is How I Updated
* Ignoring the template fiasco…
1) FTP’ed old site onto my hard drive c:\PapillonLvr.com\blog\*.*
2) Logged into phpMyAdmin and backed up my database..
– You select database on the left
– Select Export on top right
– tick the “Add DROP TABLE” in the Structure fields
– tick the “Save as File” and leave File Name template as is
– press GO and store backup on my local C:\backups\MySql\2007-01-22\ folder3) Downloaded the latest 2.1 version into my c:\INSTALLS\wordpress\versions\2.1\ folder and updated all of the plugins I use
4) copied the new version into a new folder on my hard drive c:\2.1\ to speed up FTP’ing process .. and copied all of the updated plugins into c:\2.1\wp-content\plugins\ etc (a few had files that needed to be copied into root of wordpress or c:\2.1\ folder itself
5) went to my plugins manager, printed the page and then deactivated all of them
6) FTP everything overwriting existing files without concern to deleting anything .. although, I did first delete all backups and cache files and folders existing in the wp-content online
7) did the upgrade script ../blog/wp-admin/upgrade.php
8) Went back into the plugin manager and only activated the plugins that were added from my local c:\2.1\ files (I’ll delete the inactive ones later .. I want to wait and see if there are ever any updates to them before removing)
9) And, this is where everything would have worked out well – except for the template issue that I had.
Plugins That Are Activated
* Admin Menu 3.2
* Akismet 2.0
* Audio Player 1.2.3
* Auto-hyperlink URLS 2.01
* AutoMeta 0.8
* Auto Social Poster 1.5
* Exec-PHP 3.0
* Feedburner Feed Replacement 2.2
* Spam Karma 2.2r3
* Subscribe2 2.1.4
* WordPress Database Backup 2.0
* WP-Amazon 1.3.1
* WP-ContactForm 1.4.3Plugins That I Can’t Use Anymore – I guess
* Bunny’s Technorati Tags
* Image Browser
* KG Archives
* Random Excerpt
* WP Admin Bar 2
* WP ShortstatPlugin That I missed The Most
* Random Excerpt – For every post I have been making in the blog for instance, I was replicating the picture of my dogs that I have been posting with a width size of 150px and having it randomly showing up in the sidebar with a link back to the URL it originally showed up, in original size.
How many Blogs Have I updated Since
None. But – I am convinced that each blog should only take about 10-15 minutes to upgrade – for the ones over 2.0+ version but the ones that are below this version needs a double take on the plugins and template version to see if everything will work. I will be able to automate things a little. For instance, The sites on my ISP#1 are all domain aliases of PetLvr and as such, also folders of the mega site’s root folder. The backup MySQL is about 250MB in size when I backup up it all in one shot. All the sites on the ISP#2 are easily accessed from the cPanel and will take about 1 hour to backup all the 30 domains – which, isn’t bad for ME – at this time. If I don’t do it all at once, it would probably take me about 10 minutes per domain .. and ultimately take longer.
So, I’ve decided to wait until I have a block of time during the upcoming weeks to do this in a few shots or all at once – most likely the weekend .. or, if I can’t do that – after many January 31st deadlines that I have to do.
I’m still checking out the plugins and interested in reading other people’s successes and issues they have received while upgrading – especially in a few sites from my Bloglines.

* A New Pioneering Link Placement Service
That’s what the email says ….
Some big news from V7N: contextual.v7n.com
This is our new, pioneering blog link placement service. Link builders get access to thousands of quality blogs, and blog publishers earn cash by placing links in their blog posts.
We’ve got over $50,000 to give away, so get involved now!
I like V7N .. they have interesting things happening, and I do frequent there once in a while. In fact, the great logo for 62-151 Media Group was designed and compliments by JuggoPop and V7N.com / v7design.com.
But, now they are finding advertisers who publish links in their blogs as a regular post, something like $10.00 per link. The link can’t be in the same post as a competitor. Although, apparently there is no obligation to give any review, be it good or bad .. you are supposed to write a couple sentences or a blog entry and slip in the link. Then you get paid.
Oh – it gets better.
You can’t tell anybody that it is a paid-for link. And, if you are an advertiser, you cannot disclose that you are advertising on a person’s blog.
There’s even a non-disclosure agreement that has to be something .. (acknowledged? Signed? I’m not sure). And, if you disclose that you were paid to insert a link in your blog – which, by the way has to remain for at least 1 year and/or the life of your blog – you can be fined $1,000 per violation.
To Each His/Her Own I guess …. If you are interested .. Sign up here .. and then watch this forum.
Didn’t they make a new law about disclosure? I’m not sure. But, I won’t be participating, just like I never participated in the Review Me, the Pay Per Post, and so on and so on. Although, at $10 a pop .. if there are many advertisers wishing to do this – I think there will be a lot of bloggers making some extra money, and I’ll be reading these articles or blog posts with only 1-2 paragraphs with more skepticism.

January 21st, 2007HART-Empire Network
I’ve hinted that I am waiting until wordpress version 2.1 comes out before I upgrade all of my blogs, and that I am planning to standardize the upgrades .. starting with keeping all of them on the same playing field. What this means, is that I have to get all of my blogs on the same version .. and use the same version of plugins all around the network on all my blogs. One of my biggest problems, is that on many of the plugins, they don’t work on higher versions of wordpress .. or, the newest upgrades do not work on the lower versions of wordpress that I have. Add to these to situations, with the new wordpress 2.1 version .. it’s possible that none of the versions will ever work and I need even newer updated versions or I will have to drop some of my favorite plugins!
Here’s my problem in a nutshell ..
* I’ve got 40 blogs
* I’ve got 88 different wordpress plugins activated among them
* That leaves a total of 887 activated plugins in total
* There are 6 different wordpress versions from 1.5.2 thru 2.0.5 installedAnd how did I figure this out? Well .. the accountant in me just did what it takes – to get the job done. I created a spreadsheet of all of my plugins down the side columns .. and all my blogs along the top columns .. and just went through every single plugin I had activated – for each blog. I did not bother to include any plugins that I’ve long ago deactivated, but still remain in my plugin folder. Everyone of the plugins listed here are actually in use – somewhere – within my network
USELESS FACTS ABOUT MY PLUGINS
Blogs with Plugins Activated
* Blogs having more than 45 plugins activated – 2
* Blogs having between 30-45 plugins activated – 9
* Blogs having between 20-30 plugins activated – 8
* Blogs having between 10-20 plugins activated – 19
* Blogs having less than 10 plugins activated – 2Most Popular Plugins Activated
* Plugins activated in more than 30 blogs – 6
* Plugins activated between 20-30 blogs – 11
* Plugins activated between 10-20 blogs – 17
* Plugins activated in less than 10 blogs – 6These are all of the Plugins Activated Somewhere!
Note: PLEASE! If you know for a fact that any of these plugins will NOT work in wordpress version 2.1 .. can you please leave me a comment? Muchly appreciated!

* 3:55 pm CST and my sitemeter is not working…
At this very moment .. not one of my blogs have the sitemeter code displaying in the footer, and I can’t seem to show any of the public stats for any of my blogs. In fact, I can’t even access the site. I never noticed how long it has been not working. My first glance showed that the site exceeded something .. (band usage?) I wish I took a screen shot! After I hit refresh .. it was a blank white screen constantly trying to reload.
* 4:05 pm CST // update
Before I finished writing this post .. it seemed to clear it self up and I can see my stats now. That was weird!
I’ll just leave this post up anyway, rather than delete .. since I saved it as I was going along.
Did anybody else notice anything unusual? I must say .. that is the first time I’ve had any issues with Sitemeter.

January 21st, 2007Hmmmm Things
I have decided to remove a few things from a few sidebars…
i.e. .. the Performancing Ads in the sidebars of PetLvr.com/blog/ 1800HART.com/blog/ HART-Network.com and callHART.com/crazy/ respectively.
I signed up at the end of last October 2006 (or was it early November?) and these ads have been on my sites ever since. No Sales – but that’s okay. But for some reason, that 4th ad bugs me .. A LOT! Why? Because it’s a different ad – that’s why. I understand the need to ‘shake things up’, because readers’ eyes tend to go blind to advertising and for stuff that never changes .. but this morning (doped up on Tim Horton Coffee all night) all I see is a different ad for Performancing! Not a link to a place where future sponsors can possibly advertise on my sidebar. Maybe it was the mouse over that blocked a link that I was trying to click on.. I can’t remember actually
Remember that Walter Cronkite skit on S.C.T.V. with Dave Thomas ? Basically it was this. There was a sign behind on the wall that said $Dialing For Dollar$ and Walter would pronounce it as “Dialing For Dollars”. A psycho called in to correct him .. it really is … “dollar sign diailing for dollar dollar sign” .. and Booooooy that bugged him (and you hear chains in the background). Well, it was quite funny but, one of those things you had to see I suppose!
But .. I digress. You know how it is .. you try somethings .. you try some other things .. some things work .. some things do not work .. I just don’t think that this was working for me, and – just like an impulse shopper – (booooy it bugged me) .. I went and took myself off the market over there and deleted my blogs in that account. I also removed the ads off of my sidebars.
You could say that my mind was in the “MOOD” of monetization .. because while catching up on my bloglines .. I can’t begin to tell you exactly how many times I read stuff similar to this last night ..
“Google Now Allows Other Contextual Ads” via Problogger from Jensense .. (poor Darren and Jennifer for everybody creating content like that // oops! So did I now). I have yet to sign up to the Yahoo version, and I don’t qualify for most of the other options out there that require over 50,000 per month traffic.
In the month of December – one of the best shopping months of the year I might add – I only earned $5.23 USD and lifetime earned about $75.00 since October 2005 when I signed up. But, I finally reached $100.00 payout of Amazon USA affiliation .. although I wonder if they will pay me this quarter, because being a Canadian Citizen they will be deducting a fee according to their website, and that fee will bring the gross below this $100 threshold.
I need some monetization that works, but I hate relying on Google Adsense.
I do have a few other things happening with one of the stores I run and one of the 2 cafepress stores that I forgot that I had created .. and I think I am making progress in the “social” aspect of blogging .. promoting HART (1-800-HART) around the ‘net. I surf MyBlogLog a lot now .. and still in the process of setting up a MySpace account .. and have a few things in the backburner cooking for 2007.
So .. back to “less is more” .. I’m in the process of cleaning up my white space and sidebars around the network and slimming down my plugins and trying to look at the big picture.
Meanwhile – I should say that I have signed up to two new monetization sites .. LINKWORTH and BLOGKITS.
Linkworth.com is basically a site similar to Text-Link-Ads .. although I get to choose the value for my blogs. As a benefit to the advertiser, extra text description is added to the text link in my sidebar. For now, I have just signed up the Battling-Series of blogs, and the LVR-Series of blogs (minus PetLvr blog) and call HART crazy. The ads will appear in my sidebars.
Blogkits.com is basically a site similar to an affiliated site like Amazon. Advertisers only pay when a sale is made. The program ads a rotated code at the end of each post, and there might be a box ad in the sidebar. Currently, I am using this only on the Battling-Series of blogs.
My plan is to try and make the Battling-Series of blogs financially worth the effort for a wanna-be blogger to take over from me and share in the revenue generation and help build up the blog (PS I’m still looking).

Alternate Post Title => Quickies – January 21, 2007
* Upgrades, Upgrades, Upgrades …
Ever since wordpress 2.0.6 came out .. I have been looking over my sites, mostly the plugins and other stuff thinking that with all the different blogs that I have – I should be more standardized.
Then, 2.07 came out and now .. 2.1 on its way. I’ve decided to just wait and go with the flow.
Meanwhile, I have this open DRAFT post here of many links that I find in My Bloglines, but don’t want to “Keep” but, if I have time .. I really wanted to take a second look. This is one of these moments that makes it all worthwhile keeping this draft, because – seriously – I’ve got a lot of crappy links that I put in there! (What was I thinking!?)
You would be wise to check this out – if you even think there might be an issue with your META Tags…
Meta Tag Analyzer Tool
By the way .. that link was posted by the Earning Money Blog .. although I found that back in December 2006 from the Friedbeef’s Tech Blog.
And How Did My META Tags Get Analyzed?
DON’T ASK! Although, I was comparing the meta tag analyzer report for PetLvr.com/blog/ and this blog .. it’s like night and day, and both in need of a good look over. Yes – work is needed here.

* The Battling-Obesity.com Gallery
It’s not that much news that I’ve been looking for gallery scripts for about a year and a half now. I’ve got two big galleries, one for the PetLvr blog and the other for the HARTandYVONNE blog. But, it’s a lot of work for simple blogs, that are not photography blogs. This is all I wanted out of a gallery:
1) Something simple, like my various directory script galleries that I have setup around my domains (like the Victoria Beach gallery) but integrated into WordPress.
2) I do not want to maintain a gallery, or add to it or upload pictures to it or sort it. I just wanted a gallery automatically created from the already existing pictures that are in my blog.
3) It would be nice to be able to comment on a picture, to describe it better or link back to the original page where the picture originated – if I wanted to.
Well, 2 out of 3 aint bad!
I’m using the Lazy Gallery Plugin. It pretty much creates thumbnail views and displays the pictures anyway you want. For the picture gallery, you setup a default directory, and since the later versions of wordpress, these are now /wp-content/uploads/ … and a perfect starting point for the gallery! It just so happens that in the Battling-Obesity blog, I’m using the option to sort pictures by month by year so it only helps keep this gallery organized.
It probably won’t work on a few of my blogs, because since version 1.52 of wordpress .. most of my pictures were being posted straight into /wp-content/ folder. And, if you set this up as your default gallery .. then the sub-folders for the plugins and cache and themes and all that shows up for display too – No exceptions! I probably will reorganize if I decide to do it on these older blogs. Also, you are required to actually place a file called lazy-index.php into your root wordpress folder .. but I renamed mine as gallery.php and added a few lines before and after the gallery, as you can see.
Check it out – it might be what you are looking for too .. if you are posting a lot of pictures, and want to see them all in one place. I did – because I’m posting pictures of my daily meals .. and yes – I created every meal myself!

* Did he catch you?
To: hart @ ……..
Subject: amnezia has added you as a contact on MyBlogLog
From: “noreply@mybloglog.com”Check it! amnezia has made you a contact on MyBlogLog. Click below to visit their profile, where you can learn more about them and add them as a contact as well.
www.mybloglog.com/buzz/members/amnezia/
Congratulations on your growing sphere of influence. Today, MyBlogLog; tomorrow, the world!
Well .. my standard policy is that I will add anybody who adds me as a contact, I will add that person as a contact. But when I went to my profile .. I didn’t see his picture looking at my profile … which is odd, because that’s where you ask to be a contact. So I clicked on the website and saw his post … www.webmasterwords.com/mybloglog-experiment-part-1
Needless to say, he is still a contact .. (and from the graphic below so are 4,332 others) .. but I only join communities of those MyBlogLog readers who actually visit one of my sites .. so I did not join his community.
PS: It has been pissing me off everytime I click to add a contact, that I get transported back to MY PROFILE .. and not the profile of the contact that I have just added .. but, for once it was worth it.

Catching up on my S.E.O.
The more I read many of the articles linked on my 62-151.com .. the more I realize that I need to figure this out better in 2007!
Planning for the Upgrade of WordPress
It’s six of one, half a dozen of the other .. I think I’m going to wait until version 2.1 comes out. I have come up with some ideas to somewhat help me get all these blogs of mine in the sidebar upgraded to the same level .. I wish I could utililize a mass automated upgrade process … like Aaron Brazell suggests … but I’m not quite ready (knowledgable-wise) to implement something like that. So .. this is how I will be doing my upgrades:
* I will basically be following this procedure as I’ve upgraded wordpress versions in the past
* I’ve decided to first deactivate every plugin in all my blogs, delete them all .. and create one complete standardized set of updated plugins that I want, and need .. and that is applicable for all blogs. I will copy them directly into my c:\2.1\wordpress\wp-content\plugins\ folder directly … so when I update the blogs with the new version – all the plugins are ALREADY INCLUDED. In the past, I’ve kept all of my plugins separately in a c:\installed-programs\wordpress\plugins\PLUGIN-v1.1\ etc format available to copy over to other blogs when needed. Now .. If all my blogs are on the same platform .. I’ll just keep the latest plugin with the software. This way, if I create new blogs during the year – it should be a breeze.
* I will be mass activating all plugins at once to save some timeDid I say “Quickies – January 15, 2007”?
Where has the time gone? I’m just getting organized again and found a new ToDo Software program .. It’s just what I needed, although I did experience an error message last week. I forwarded the error message to the software people and they promised a fix by the top of the week (which, is better than suggesting there is nothing wrong).
Pretty soon my blogging will be shifting from spurts and impulse blogging .. to the more preposted, sectionally shifted and concentrated blogging.
And .. umm… what does that mean? It probably just defines the way I have been blogging in the past, except a bit more concentrating on specific channels at a time, before finding time to work around the blogs in the network code.
